On October 15th, during a tour at Sagres, A Rocha Life guide Guillaume Réthoré (Gui) spotted a goose flying over the road between Sagres and Cape St Vincent. This bird came from the North, went towards the Sagres before turning around and flying towards the sea. Geese are a rare sighting in the Algarve and this one did not look like a Greylag Goose (Anser anser), the most common species in the area (even though pretty rare). A look at the pictures combined with the bird hearing calling allowed us to identify this bird as a Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus). If accepted by the Portuguese Rarity Committee, this would be the first sighting for the Algarve. Later during the day, this bird flew again over the area and was found again a few days later. It has been present in the area since and will probably spend the winter there.
