Another great birding place is the Ria Formosa, so let’s move east, to the opposite of Sagres and stop in the saltpans of Santa Luzia. This area is used for salt production but many birds are found in the various lagoons looking for food. About 15 species of waders can be found there. One of the main attractions of the place are the Flamingos, sometimes in big numbers. However, the nerdiest birders will look for less attractive birds: gulls! This is indeed a very good place to see Slender-billed and Audouin’s Gulls. In winter, it is not rare to see an Osprey fishing in the channel between the saltpans and Tavira island.

Have a look at our tours to enjoy some great birding!
